Opera house in Vienna

Opera house in Vienna (late 19th cent.)

Postcard (color photolithography; between 1890 and 1905)

This is how the opera house looked like on January 27 (February 8), 1891, when Lesja Ukrainka and her mother attended a performance of R. Wagner’s opera "Meistersinger von Nürnberg". We pay attention to electric and horse trams.

On January 31 (February 12), 1891, Lesja Ukrainka visited Halévy’s opera "La Juive", and on February 1 (13) – at the performance of R. Wagner’s opera "Siegfried"; February 19 (March 3) – at the performance of G. Verdi’s opera "Othello"; she also listened to D. Meyerber’s opera "The Prophet" and I. Bayer’s ballet "Fairy Tale" [Ein Tanzmärchen. Ballet and Einem Vorspielle und vier Abteilung (vierzehn Bildern) von F. Gaul und J. Hassreiter. Musik von I. Baier)].

Lesja Ukrainka was very pleased with the performances (letter to his brother Michael from 13 (25) February 1891).
